Basics of Parenting – Help with Raising Your Kids
It’s unfortunate but true how many parents simply do not know the basics to raising their children in today’s society. The general concept is to not be too harsh, not have too many strict rules, and try to be your child’s best friend. People may then wonder why today’s generation of kids is so defiant, rebellious, unruly, and unmannered. There are some basic thoughts that will go a long way when raising your kids.
Whether you like it or not, you have to lay some ground rules for your children. That would probably be the most basic aspect of parenting. Yes, you have to give your children bed times, consequences for not accomplishing homework or chores, and rules in regards to computer and television usage. Without some guidelines as to how they are to behave, children can and will wreak havoc. While they may put up a fuss at first, children actually thrive on guided and proper discipline.
In order to parent properly, you must be in control. If your child is ruling the house, get whatever he wants whenever he wants it, there is a problem. The parents are older and have more wisdom, and therefore, need to be the figures in charge. You must demand respect by your actions. And that is not to say that you need to be yelling or screaming. Actions, when they are controlled, dignified, and patiently determined, will help your children respect you and therefore, obey your rules.
Don’t raise your children to be spoiled. They will survive if they don’t always have the latest, greatest fashions. Yes, they will turn out all right even if they don’t have the newest video games system or they don’t get to travel across the world. It’s not a problem to bless your kids, give them gifts, or delight them with something exciting, but if that is something they come to expect or they learn how to manipulate you into gifting them, they will turn into spoiled adults who will expect such royal treatment to continue.
Perhaps the basis for all good parenting should be to teach your kids that the world does not revolve around them. Once they understand that, parents can build and nurture, raising children who will be well-mannered, responsible, and a pleasant addition to society.
